Fine Arts - Art Contest And Recognitions

The Columbus Literacy Alliance annually sponsors "It's All About Words." The purpose of the event is to promote the importance of having a large vocabulary for elementary students. One student from each school is chosen to select a word or phrase and create a meaningful canvas (artwork) communicating the word or phrase.

The Columbus Chapter of the Audubon Society co-sponsors an art show with Oxbow Meadows annually in March. The principle purpose of this art show is to encourage students to learn about birds, their beauty, and their role in the natural world. This art show is open to all Muscogee County students, grades K-8. Entries from grades K-2 will be judged as a group, grades 3-5 as a group, and grades 6-8 as a group. Ribbons will be presented to the winners in each of the categories and a special award to top entry in each category. Annual High School Jewelry Design Contest

• Contest open to Muscogee County School District Art and CTAE high school students only.
• One entry per student.
• Design must be student’s original art work.
• Not responsible for the return of art work.
• Decision of CAD designers is final. Names and addresses of CAD designers will be available upon request.
• Give to school Art or CTAE teacher or drop off at John Paul Jewelers.

The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is a non-profit organization. Proceeds are divided among various community art organizations. Beneficiaries are extremely involved in race operations and commit vast volunteer labor hours to its success. Since its beginning in 1985, proceeds from The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens has generated over $3.3 Million for arts related organizations in the Columbus and surrounding area.

Steeplechase is a competitive sporting event that provides spectators an opportunity to watch the thrills, smarts and athletic ability of Thoroughbred race horses as they jump over 52” high hurdles at premium speeds. Thoroughbreds, almost all of them converted from flat racing, compete in 12 states at some 36 National Steeplechase Association (NSA) stops both in the spring and fall of every year. The 2-3/8 mile course near Callaway Gardens has been cited as one of the most beautiful in the United States. The 200-acre site is cradled in hardwoods and statuesque Georgia pines with rolling hills overlooking Pine Mountain Ridge. The scenery is punctuated with striking colors of the changing leaves. It is a wonderful setting for a day in the country.

Each year Steeplechase invites our students to participate in the Steeplechase Art Contest. The contest is open to all local students. The winning artwork is displayed at the Columbus Museum in October.
