Assessment - End-of-Course Testing Out Option

The Georgia Department of Education currently allows high school students the option to "test out" of a high school course that has an associated EOC. Currently, those courses with an associated EOC are:

Language Arts - American Literature and Composition
Mathematics - Algebra: Concepts and Connections
Science - Biology
Social Studies - United States History

To test out, students can take an End of Course (EOC) Test (before enrolling in and taking the course) and if they score at the “Distinguished Learner” level on the assessment, they will be awarded credit for that course.

While this is an opportunity for students to move past some high school courses without taking them, parents should carefully weigh the impact since some classes are stepping stones for others. While a student might successfully test out of one course, it does not mean that he or she will necessarily be successful in the next course, especially if they missed foundational concepts.

To pursue the test-out option, typically done in the summer, contact the high school that your student will be enrolled in the next school year. The administration and guidance departments can schedule them in the next available testing opportunity. Taking an EOC assessment for the purpose of testing out of a subject costs approximately $50 paid by the student/parent to the school; however, this amount will be refunded to anyone who scores at the "Distinguished Learner" level.
